Description
Product Description Hardox 450 Steel Plate
Hardox 450 is part of the Hardox wear plate series, produced by SSAB, a Swedish steel company renowned for its innovative steel solutions. It is a quenched and tempered steel plate with a nominal hardness of 450 HBW (Brinell Hardness). This hardness and impressive toughness make Hardox 450 an ideal material for heavy-duty applications that demand high wear resistance.
Key Properties of Hardox 450 Steel Plate
- Abrasion Resistance: Hardox 450 is engineered to withstand severe wear and tear. Its high hardness ensures excellent resistance to abrasion, prolonging the lifespan of components.
- Toughness: Despite its hardness, Hardox 450 exhibits remarkable toughness. This property allows it to endure heavy impacts without cracking, making it suitable for demanding environments.
- High Strength: Hardox 450 offers exceptional yield and tensile strength, enabling it to handle heavy loads without deformation.
- Weldability: Unlike many high-hardness steels, Hardox 450 maintains good weldability. It can be welded using standard welding methods, provided the correct preheating and post-welding practices are followed.
- Machinability: Although it is harder than conventional steel, Hardox 450 can be machined with proper tools and techniques.
- Flatness and Surface Quality: Hardox 450’s tight flatness tolerances and superior surface quality enhance its performance in various applications
Hardox 450 Steel Plate Dimensions
- Thickness: Hardox 450 plates are available in thicknesses ranging from 3 to 130 mm, while sheets are available in thicknesses ranging from 2 to 8 mm.
- Width: Hardox 450 plates and sheets can be up to 3350 mm wide.
- Length: Hardox 450 plates and sheets can be up to 14630 mm long.
- Preferred widths: For plates and sheets with thicknesses between 3 and 6 mm and widths up to 1600 mm, the preferred widths are 1500 or 1600 mm.
- Preferred widths for thick plates: For plates thicker than 80 mm, the preferred width is 1650 mm.
- Preferred widths for thick plates over 3.15 in: For plates thicker than 3.15 in, the preferred width is 64.96 in.

Fabrication and Processing
- Cutting: Hardox 450 can be cut using thermal cutting methods such as oxy-fuel, plasma, or laser cutting. Mechanical cutting, such as shearing, is also possible but requires proper tooling.
- Welding:
- Preheating is recommended for thicker plates to prevent cracking.
- Use low-hydrogen electrodes or wires to minimize hydrogen-induced cracking.
- Proper post-welding cooling practices ensure optimal results.
- Bending: Hardox 450 can be cold-formed, provided the bending radius is within recommended limits. Using the correct tooling and techniques is essential to avoid cracking.
- Machining:
- Carbide tools are recommended for machining Hardox 450.
- Lower cutting speeds and higher feed rates improve tool life.
