AR450 Steel
AR450 Abrasion Resistant Steel
AR450 Abrasion Resistant Steel is a high hardness wear-resistant steel plate designed to provide superior resistance against abrasion, impact, and sliding wear. With a typical hardness of around 450 Brinell Hardness (HB), AR450 steel offers higher durability and longer service life compared to lower hardness grades such as AR400.
AR450 plates are widely used in industries that operate in extremely abrasive environments such as mining, quarrying, material handling, construction, and cement production. The steel combines high strength with excellent toughness, making it suitable for heavy-duty equipment that must endure constant friction and impact.
Due to its enhanced hardness, AR450 steel significantly improves equipment lifespan, reduces maintenance costs, and minimizes operational downtime.

Corrosion Resistance
AR450 abrasion resistant steel provides moderate corrosion resistance, similar to standard carbon steels. While it is primarily designed for abrasion resistance rather than corrosion resistance, it performs well in dry and moderately humid environments.
For highly corrosive environments, protective coatings, painting, or galvanizing may be recommended to enhance corrosion protection.
Heat Resistance
AR450 steel can withstand moderate operating temperatures. However, prolonged exposure to high temperatures above 250–300°C may reduce its hardness and wear resistance. Therefore, AR450 plates are generally used in environments where abrasion resistance is required at normal or moderately elevated temperatures.
Heat Treatment
AR450 plates are usually supplied in quenched and tempered condition, which provides the required hardness and toughness.
Typical heat treatment process includes:
- Austenitizing at high temperature
- Rapid quenching in water or oil
- Tempering to achieve the desired hardness and mechanical properties
Additional heat treatment is generally not recommended as it may affect the hardness of the material.
Welding
AR450 steel has good weldability when appropriate welding procedures are followed.
Recommended welding practices include:
- Preheating depending on plate thickness
- Using low hydrogen electrodes
- Controlling heat input to prevent hardness reduction
- Post weld stress relief if required
Common welding methods include MIG, TIG, and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).
Fabrication
Despite its high hardness, AR450 steel can be fabricated using standard industrial processes.
Common fabrication methods include:
- Plasma cutting
- Laser cutting
- Waterjet cutting
- Machining
- Bending with appropriate equipment
- Forming and shaping
Proper tooling and process control are necessary due to the high hardness of the material.
Applications
- Mining and quarry equipment
- Dump truck bodies
- Excavator buckets and loaders
- Crushers and screening equipment
- Chutes, hoppers, and bins
- Conveyor liners and wear plates
- Cement plant machinery
- Agricultural equipment
- Material handling systems
- Construction and earthmoving machinery
