BS4504 Flange Pressure Classes

These pressure classes indicate the maximum working pressure (in bars) the flange can withstand

High-Temperature Applications

BS4504 flanges made from stainless and alloy steel are ideal for high-temperature environments. They are commonly used in:

  • Steam and condensate systems.
  • Chemical processing plants.
  • Power generation units.

Low-Temperature Applications

Carbon and alloy steel’s low-temperature grades are suitable for cryogenic and sub-zero conditions. Applications include:

  • LNG and LPG transportation.
  • Cold storage and refrigeration systems.
  • Arctic pipeline projects.

Tolerance

  • Diameter Tolerances:
    1. The outside diameter (OD) of the flange and the bolt hole circle diameter are subject to specific tolerances to ensure they fit with pipe dimensions and bolt pattern requirements.
    2. For instance, the outside diameter tolerance is generally around +1.5 mm / -0 mm for flanges within certain size ranges (depending on the size of the flange).
  • Bolt Hole and Bolt Circle Tolerances:
    1. The bolt hole diameter tolerance is usually ±0.2 mm.
    2. The bolt hole spacing (bolt circle diameter) tolerance can range from ±0.5 mm to ±1.0 mm, depending on the flange size and type.
  • Thickness Tolerances:
    1. The thickness of the flange typically has a tolerance of ±0.5 mm for certain sizes, but it can vary based on the pressure class and flange type.
  • Flange Facing Tolerances:
    1. For flanges with a raised face, the height tolerance is usually around ±0.2 mm.
    2. For flat-faced flanges, there might be a ±0.5 mm tolerance for the overall flatness.
    3. The surface finish (e.g., roughness) is also part of the tolerance, especially for sealing surfaces. This is often given as a specific Ra value.
  • Angle Tolerances:
    1. The angle of certain flange parts like the raised face or bevels can typically have a tolerance of ±1 degree.

Materials

BS4504 flanges can be constructed from a variety of materials, depending on the intended purpose, including:

  • Carbon Steel: Economical and suitable for moderate conditions.
  • Stainless Steel: High corrosion resistance and hygienic applications.
  • Alloy Steel: Enhanced strength and resistance to extreme temperatures.
  • Duplex Steel: High strength and excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Non-Metallic Materials: For specific applications like PVC or composite systems.

Flange Face Types

The flange face type is crucial for ensuring a proper seal and includes:

  • Flat Face (FF): For low-pressure applications.
  • Raised Face (RF): Used for moderate to high-pressure applications.
  • Ring Type Joint (RTJ): Used in high-pressure and high-temperature environments.
  • Tongue & Groove: For specialized sealing requirements.
  • Male & Female: Used in applications requiring precise alignment and sealing.

Applications

  • Oil and gas industries: Pipelines, refineries, and offshore platforms.
  • Petrochemical Plants: For high-pressure and high-temperature fluid transport.
  • Power Generation: In steam lines, cooling systems, and other utilities.
  • Water Treatment Plants: Suitable for low and medium-pressure applications.
  • Construction: In HVAC systems and structural supports.
  • Food & Beverage: For sanitary and corrosion-resistant piping systems.
