Description
ASTM A514 Steel Plate
ASTM A514, usually referred to as T1 steel plate, is a quenched and tempered alloy steel plate having a yield strength of 100,000 psi (690 MPa). It’s designed for structural use and high-wear applications, offering excellent toughness, weldability, and impact-abrasion resistance, even at low temperatures. Chromium, nickel, and molybdenum are added to the steel to increase its strength and corrosion resistance.
Key Features:
- High yield strength: Up to 100 ksi (690 MPa)
- Excellent weldability
- Good formability
- Resistance to abrasion and impact
- Cost-effective weight-to-strength ratio
Chemical Composition

| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.025 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.025 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.40 – 0.65 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.15 – 0.25 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 0.80 – 1.20 |
| Vanadium (V) | 0.03 – 0.10 |
Mechanical Properties
| Property | Value |
| Yield Strength | 100 ksi (690 MPa) min |
| Tensile Strength | 110–130 ksi (760–895 MPa) |
| Elongation in 2” | 18% min |
| Brinell Hardness | 235–293 HB |
Weldability
A514 is weldable but requires careful handling due to its high strength and tendency to harden if cooled too quickly. Preheating (350-400°F), controlled interpass temperatures, and slow cooling are recommended to prevent cracking. Common welding methods include SMAW (E-11018 rods) or FCAW (e.g., E110T5-K4 with 75-85% Ar/15-25% CO2 shielding gas).
