Description
A572 GR 42
A572 Grade 42 is a structural steel grade having a high strength to low alloy content (HSLA) that is widely used in construction and structural applications. It is part of the ASTM A572 specification, which has five grades: 42, 50, 55, 60, and 65. Grade 42 has the lowest minimum yield strength but provides an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and weldability.
Key Features of A572 Grade 42:
- Standard: ASTM A572 / A572M
- Grade: 42
- Type: HSLA (High Strength Low Alloy)
- Form: Plates, Sheets
- Applications: Bridges, buildings, cranes, structural components

Tolerances
Mill Plate:
- Thickness, width, and length tolerances conform to ASTM A6 standards.
- Flatness tolerances are available up to Half-Standard ASTM A6 for plate thicknesses ranging from 9.5 mm to 76.2 mm (3/8″ to 3.0″).
Temper Leveled Plate:
- Thickness, width, and length tolerances adhere to ASTM A6 standards.
- Flatness tolerances meet or exceed Half-Standard ASTM A6, depending on processing and material yield strength.
Coils for Conversion To:
- For minimum gauge orders:
- Thickness and width tolerances comply with ASTM A568 for thicknesses less than 5.84 mm (0.230″).
- ASTM A635 standards apply for thicknesses from 5.84 mm to 25.4 mm (0.230″ to 1.00″).
- Specific thickness tolerances for nominal gauge orders require inquiry.
