Description
IS 3589 Pipe
IS 3589 is the Indian Standard specification for seamless and welded steel pipes used for water, gas, and sewage systems. These pipes are a vital component of fluid transportation infrastructure, with widespread use in both industrial and municipal purposes. Their robust construction, durability, and capacity to handle high-pressure conditions make them ideal for underground, above-ground, and underwater piping systems.
At Emirerri Steel, we specialize in manufacturing and supplying IS 3589 steel pipes that meet the stringent requirements laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). To meet a wide range of industrial applications, we offer pipes of varying thicknesses, diameters, and lengths.
What is IS 3589?
IS 3589 refers to the Indian Standard 3589, issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which covers the specifications for Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) and seamless pipes. These pipes are predominantly used for conveying water, gas, sewage, and other fluids under both normal and high-pressure conditions.
Key Features
- High Strength: Made from high-tensile carbon steel to withstand high pressure and load conditions.
- Corrosion Resistance: Available with anti-corrosive coatings like galvanization or epoxy lining.
- Dimensional Accuracy: Manufactured to close tolerances with excellent roundness and straightness.
- Weldability: Suitable for various welding methods like MIG, TIG, and arc welding.
- Versatility: Available in custom sizes, lengths, and finishes to meet specific project needs.
IS 3589 Pipe Material Specification
IS 3589 pipes are typically manufactured using carbon steel. Depending on the application and pressure requirements, various grades are defined under the standard:
Common Material Grades:
- FE 330 – Equivalent to ASTM A283 Grade C; used for moderate pressure applications.
- FE 410 – Equivalent to ASTM A36; offers higher strength and suitable for structural and water transportation purposes.
- FE 450 – High tensile steel suitable for more demanding applications.
These materials offer a combination of strength, weldability, and resistance to corrosion and scaling. Additional surface coatings like black painting, galvanization, or epoxy coating can further enhance resistance in corrosive environments.
Manufacturing Process
1. Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) Pipes:
- Made by cold-forming hot-rolled steel strips into a cylindrical shape and welding the seam longitudinally using electric resistance.
2. Seamless Pipes (where applicable):
- Produced by extruding or drawing the steel billet to form a pipe without any welded seam.
3. Hot Finished or Cold Finished Pipes:
- Hot finished pipes are formed and cooled directly after rolling.
- Cold finished pipes undergo additional processing for better dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
